Empowering Women

For a woman to be considered, especially in a developing country and in earlier centuries, as an equal to a man is certainly a foreign concept to many. Statistics on gender-based violence demonstrate a high prevalence of different forms of violence against women across the EU including Malta, with percentages which range to being higher than EU averages. Though the unification of women around the world has since improved slightly from past times, a woman still has a long journey to equality. One important issue which needs to be addressed continually is the factor of gender-based violence, both physically and psychologically. Primarily imposed on women, the 25th of November was dedicated to commemorate the elimination of violence against women with the UN urging governments, international and non-governmental organisations to raise awareness on this matter. In this context, the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality (NCPE) acknowledges the importance of commemorating the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This matter should interest feminists around the world to become activists, spread the word, and speak up against critics and radicals to ensure that the people know what is happening behind the curtains. Educating and empowering people all around the world to become feminists is the key to lower the percentages of gender-based violence, both on a national and international retrospect. Women who were empowered and encouraged to share their stories through the #MeToo campaign have consequently created a safe atmosphere where one would not feel alone. This act focuses on the idea that violence against women is essentially a violation of human rights.
Violence against women is a persistent malaise that has seeped through all societies and constitutes a human rights violation

This act also serves as a mechanism for the protection of past victims as well as potential victims and gives confidence to survivors to stand up for themselves through various activist approaches through media or otherwise. The NCPE works to raise awareness on the need of economic independence not only through campaigns in the traditional media and on social media but also through research on developments in this area.
